Chapter 10

“About time I was hearin’ from you, woman!” Old Man Jenkins exclaimed as Aunt Shirley and I hustled inside the lobby at the Manor.

Aunt Shirley groaned and we hauled butt over to where Old Man Jenkins and Mr. O’Brien were playing checkers by the fireplace. When we reached his side, Old Man Jenkins stood and gave us both a hug.

“It was all I could do not to call,” he said. “You should have at least texted me to tell me you were okay.”

Aunt Shirley and I both looked contrite. Although, Aunt Shirley wasn’t going down without a fight.

“Just cool your jets,” she snapped. “I’m not used to reporting in to anyone. I’m used to living my life alone and on my own terms. Remember that!”

“You’re married now,” Old Man Jenkins countered. “Remember that!”

Touché!

“I don’t have time to argue semantics with you,” Aunt Shirley said, trying to save face. “We’re due over at Paige’s house for supper. Her and the twins need comfort.”

That perked Old Man Jenkins right up. “I suppose I can muster up enough strength to go over there and play with them youngins.”

“You’re lucky,” Mr. O’Brien said. “I’d give anything to have babies to bounce on my knee.”

“Maybe now that your niece is around, she’ll find someone and have some babies,” Old Man Jenkins said.

Mr. O’Brien grinned at that thought. “Hey! You’re right. I guess I better think about a good man I can introduce her to.”

Aunt Shirley snorted. “If she’s under the age of sixty, it won’t be anyone here.”

“She’s almost thirty,” Mr. O’Brien said. “And I’m sure there’s a young fellow in this town just dying to meet her.”

I was about to ask her name, but a text distracted me. I dug out my phone. “It’s from Mom. Everyone is at Paige’s house waiting on us.”

“I better go,” Old Man Jenkins said. “We can finish our game tomorrow.”

We took the elevator to the second floor so Old Man Jenkins could grab his coat and then trotted down to the Falcon. In less than five minutes we were inside Paige’s house and mingling with everyone else.

By the time it was all said and done, Aunt Shirley, Old Man Jenkins, Nick Turner, Mom, Doc, Hank, Mindy, Paige, the twins, and I all met up at Paige’s house for a potluck dinner.

“How’re things going at the high school?” Hank asked. “Those kids ready for Christmas break?”

Nick laughed. “Oh, yes. As are all the teachers.”

Nick Turner moved to Granville a few years back to teach high school history and coach football and wrestling. He was around thirty, short black hair with eyes the color of melted milk chocolate. He was physically fit and friendly enough the teachers and students all liked him.

What surprised me most, was that Nick hadn’t dated anyone since he moved to Granville. There were a lot of times when I tried to set him up, but he always turned me down. He said he was too busy to really put any time into a relationship.

“You got your tree up yet?” I asked Nick.
